Castle Bolton
The grey stone houses of West Witton sit on one of the lower escarpments of Fellhill whose steep slopes, scar lines and flat top dominate the skyline of mid Wensleydale. The village's relatively lofty position provides extensive views over Wensleydale and its western limit offers one of the finer views of Bolton Castle jutting serene and stately from the softer slopes at the other side of the valley.
Its proxmity to Penhill sumit, almost reached by the steep road running from West Witton over the crest of Coverdale or by the many tracks and footpaths criss-crossing the escarpments, places some of the most magnificent panoramas of the dales just minutes from the doorstep.
On clear days the vista reaches the far Cleveland Hills, North York Moors, Vale of York and course the rugged beauty of upper Wensleydale. The village ia a thriving community, has two public houses and a post office/general store.
